Founded in the 13th century by queen berangaria, Epau Abbey is one of the finest examples of a Cistercian building in France. Surrouned by grounds of 14 ha, the abbey has a beautiful chapter house housing the recumbent statue of the founder, a remarkable scriptorium, an abbey church lit by an elegant leaded light window in the chancel an a sacristy decorated with superb wall paintings. The former Monks' dormitory with its ceiling in the shaped of an overturned ship's hull is occasionally used as a concert hall. The abbey has a cultural vocation, which takes the form of a very complete programme of musical events, in particular Epau festival (classical music) and a series of chamber music concerts throughout the year. An magnificent historic setting and internationally famous artists make this event an absolute must.
