For nature lovers, the forests are home to many species of animals: stags, hinds, squirrels, woodpeckers etc. From mid-september to mid-october, don’t miss the dusk until midnight or the evening cries of a rutting stag in our state-owned forests. At a European level, Sarthe has a dozen natural sites listed “Natura 2000”. Two 20,000 hectares remarkable sites in the bocages are listed “Natura 2000”: in the north of the Forest of Perseigne and in the south of the Forest of Sillé-le-Guillaume, home to the Osmoderma eremita. This kind of beetle is more widely called «Pique Prune» and it is an excellent sign of biodiversity.
