Hundred years-old oak tree woodlands, the steep reliefs of the Mancelles Alps, the soft hills of the Perche Sarthois, the vineyards and slopes of the Loir River, the apple cider orchards of the Saosnois... Sarthe offers landscapes with a wide range of tonalities and colours to the walkers and runners. Several thousand kilometres of marked paths to be explored!

The Loir Valley is criss-crossed by many waymarked long distance paths (Grande Randonnée -GR) and walking and trekking paths (Petite Randonnée - PR).

The National Forest of Bercé
Covering an area of 5,300 ha, it is one of the most magnificent oak forests in France. This mature forest, used for many years by the navy, is, today, much sought after for use by woodworkers. A jewel in the Forest of Bercé, the Futaie des Clos, nowadays a major conservation site, reveals the longevity of these trees, which, sometimes can reach a height of 45 metres and which have an average age of 312 years. We also invite you to visit the «Boppe» oak tree, struck by lightning during winter 1934, at the age of 262 years. Your visit would not be complete without a trip to the Fontaine de la Coudre and the springs of Hermitière.

The Mancelles Alps
This site’s name obviously refers to its characteristic alpine relief. Set between the mountains of Narbonne (203m) and Haut Fourché (217m), its hills offer flora very similar to that of the Alps (heather, pine trees…). In the heart of the Mancelles Alps, the adorable village of Saint-Léonard-des-Bois will delight you with its natural beauty.
Several local itineraries are proposed by the Mancelles Alps Tourist Board, with route sheets provided free of charge.

The Forest of Perseigne
Covering an area of 5,012 hectares, it is renowned for its beech trees and the great diversity of its landscapes. In the heart of the Forest of Perseigne, the Belvedere, the highest point in the Department (340m) offers an outstanding viewpoint over the countryside of Saosnois and Perche. The forest will delight nature lovers who may observe the remarkable fauna of stag, deer, squirrels, etc. Attentive and discreet walkers will observe the fifty species of birds (woodpeckers, tree-creepers and the Eurasian nuthatch).
