At the foot of a limestone cliff, architects and gardeners have worked in unison since the 16th century to create what appears to be a gigantic theatre set. Down below, a formal garden with pathway lined by trees towering 6 metres in height leads strollers through a labyrinth of leafy bowers. Above, a terrace shaded by lime trees stretching along a neo-gothic wall dating from 1830, enables visitors to admire the harmonious organization of the whole. Since 1930, the grounds extend to a more intimate garden slightly lower down, sheltered from the gaze of strangers.
